In short: adding or upsizing a downspout in Cape Coral costs about $120–$250 each, and an underground drain line runs $15–$30 per foot, so a typical single run from downspout to outlet comes to $450–$1,200. These are estimates. A gutter only does half the job; this is the other half.

Why downspouts matter more than gutters
A gutter collects the water. The downspout decides where all of it lands, and in a summer storm that can be dozens of gallons a minute out of one spout. Point it at the slab and you get soaked stucco, washed-out mulch and a puddle that stays for days. Point it across a paver patio and the sand joints wash out. On a canal lot, point it toward the water and it slowly carves a gully behind the seawall cap.
What we do
- Upsize to 3×4. Older homes often have 2×3 downspouts that can’t keep up; the gutter overflows even when it’s clean.
- Add downspouts. A long run with one outlet at the end is usually short of capacity; a second outlet halves the load.
- Extensions and splash blocks. The simplest fix: carry water four to six feet away from the wall.
- Underground drains. Smooth-wall pipe buried from the base of the downspout to a pop-up emitter in the lawn or a drainage swale, out of the way of mowers and foot traffic.
Canal lots and seawalls
Much of Cape Coral sits on its canals, and a seawall depends on the soil behind it staying put. Roof water concentrated at one corner of the lot and left to run toward the wall is one of the ways that soil gets washed out. Spreading it with pop-up emitters across the lawn, or sending it to a swale away from the wall cap, takes that pressure off. If your seawall already shows sinkholes or separation behind the cap, call a marine contractor about the wall itself; we deal with where the roof water goes.
Drainage price guide
| Job | Estimated price | What moves it |
|---|---|---|
| Add or upsize a 3×4 downspout | $120–$250 | Height, elbows, color |
| Underground drain line | $15–$30 / ft | Digging, pavers to lift |
| One downspout to a pop-up emitter | $450–$1,200 | Distance and route |
| Extension or splash block | Small add-on | Usually fitted on the day |
These drainage prices are estimates. Lifting and resetting pavers, irrigation lines in the way and long runs to a swale add time; we walk the route with you before quoting.
Underground drains need a check
A buried line can fill with grit and roots over the years, especially without guards on the gutters above it. We fit a cleanout where it makes sense, and we flush existing lines during gutter cleaning.
Downspouts & drainage: common questions
Where should my downspouts drain?
Away from the house, onto ground that slopes away from it, and not toward a neighbor’s lot or straight at the seawall. We look at the grade before deciding.
Can a downspout drain into the pool deck drain?
Usually not. Deck drains are sized for splash and rain on the deck, not a roof’s worth of water, and they often clog.
Do I need a permit for underground drains?
Rules depend on the property and any HOA. We check before we dig and call in utility locates.
